One week in the Douro Valley

A seven-day excursion from Lisbon to one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world, beginning at Quinta dos Loridos and ending on the terraces above Pinhão.

The itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Lisbon · Bombarral

    Departure from Lisbon by microbus mid-morning and an hour through open countryside to Quinta dos Loridos, better known for the Buddha Eden garden planted among its vines.

  2. Days 2–3

    Coimbra · Buçaco

    The old university city and its library, then up into the Buçaco forest and the neo-Manueline palace hotel at its centre.

  3. Days 4–5

    Porto · Vila Nova de Gaia

    The port lodges across the river, a vintage tasting, and the granite city itself on foot.

  4. Days 6–7

    Régua · Pinhão

    Up the valley by road and rail to the quintas above Pinhão, with tastings on the terraces and a farewell dinner over the river.
