Byron called it a glorious Eden. We take Monserrate — the most beautiful and least crowded of Sintra's palaces — then leave the afternoon open.

North through Estremadura: a winery whose owner planted an oriental garden in protest at the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas, then medieval Óbidos, then a night in a Neo-Manueline fantasy.
